DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash Understanding

deepseek-flash is DeepSeek's multimodal Flash model (general availability since 10 Sep 2026, formerly previewed as V4-Flash-Vision-Exp) via the DeepSeek Platform's OpenAI-compatible Chat Completions API. OpenTryOn integrates it via DeepSeekUnderstandAdapter for image understanding — currently the cheapest frontier-class VLM available.

Like Kimi, Qwen3.8, and GLM-5.3-FlashX, it is general-purpose — useful for describing garments and outfits in the fashion domain, but equally capable on documents, UI screenshots, product photography, or any other image content.

For open-weight DeepSeek models that run on your own GPU instead of this hosted API — DeepSeek has no first-party hosted endpoint for them — see DeepSeek-VL2 (general multimodal understanding) and DeepSeek-OCR (document/label OCR).

Unlike those three, DeepSeek's API does not accept video input — images only.

Legacy model names deepseek-v4-flash and deepseek-v4-flash-vision-exp are still accepted upstream but are served and billed as deepseek-flash — this adapter only exposes the canonical id.

Prerequisites

  1. DeepSeek Platform account and API key: platform.deepseek.com
  2. Set DEEPSEEK_API_KEY in your .env file
  3. Optional base URL override via DEEPSEEK_BASE_URL
DEEPSEEK_API_KEY=your_deepseek_api_key
# DEEPSEEK_BASE_URL=https://api.deepseek.com # default

Installation

The DeepSeek adapter reuses the openai package (already a core dependency of opentryon, since the DeepSeek API is OpenAI-SDK compatible). No additional installation is required.

Quick Start

from tryon.api.deepseek import DeepSeekUnderstandAdapter

adapter = DeepSeekUnderstandAdapter() # deepseek-flash by default

result = adapter.understand_image(
"garment.jpg",
prompt="Describe this outfit: color, pattern, style, fit, and material.",
)
print(result["text"])
print(result["reasoning"]) # thinking content when enabled

Public https:// image URLs are passed through; local files are inlined as base64 data URIs.

CLI

opentryon understand --model deepseek-flash \
--image garment.jpg --prompt "Describe this outfit."

opentryon understand --model deepseek-flash \
--image garment.jpg --reasoning-effort none # disable thinking

opentryon understand --model deepseek-flash \
--image garment.jpg --reasoning-effort max --prompt "What's the fabric?"

--image is required — there is no text-only or video path for this model.

MCP

Same registry model appears as an MCP tool (no extra wiring):

  • understand_deepseek_flash — DeepSeek Platform API (DEEPSEEK_API_KEY)

See MCP Server and mcp-server/README.md.

API Reference

DeepSeekUnderstandAdapter

class DeepSeekUnderstandAdapter:
def __init__(
self,
api_key: Optional[str] = None, # DEEPSEEK_API_KEY
model: str = "deepseek-flash",
base_url: Optional[str] = None, # DEEPSEEK_BASE_URL or the default
)

Methods

  • understand_image(image, prompt, reasoning_effort=None, max_tokens=None)
  • understand(image=..., prompt=..., ...) — CLI / MCP entry point; raises ValueError if image is omitted

Return dict keys: text, reasoning, model, usage.
